X1 SPORTS — REFERRAL PROGRAM FRAUD PREVENTION POLICY
Version 1.0 — Applies to Trainers, Athletes, Parents, and Campus Captains
STEP 1 — Make referrals count ONLY after completing key milestones
For Trainers (NCAA Mentors)
A referred trainer ONLY counts when they:
- Complete ID Verification, AND
- Link a real bank account, AND
- Create at least ONE training session, AND
- Get approved by X1 Safety Team (automated checks)
- Fake users will NOT get this far.
For Youth Athletes
A referred youth athlete ONLY counts when they:
- Complete full athlete profile, AND
- Upload at least one performance video, OR
- Book a session, AND
- Parent approval is verified
- Again — fake accounts CAN’T do this.
For Parents
A referred parent ONLY counts when they:
- Add athlete profile, AND
- Book one session or purchase a subscription
STEP 2 — Add a “Minimum Value Rule”
A referral should “unlock” only when the new user contributes at least:
- $1 of real revenue (session or subscription)
OR
- Creates a training program (for trainers)
OR
- Uploads video + receives engagement (for athletes)
- This is exactly how Uber, DoorDash, Airbnb, Coinbase do it.
STEP 3 — Prevent duplicate accounts through tech
Require:
- Device fingerprinting (cheap, easy library)
- SMS phone verification
- Email verification
- IP address matching detection
- Disallow shared payment methods across accounts
- All modern fraud detection systems rely on these primitives.
STEP 4 — AUTOMATIC FLAGS
Create backend flags like:
- Flag if >3 new accounts created from same IP within 1 hour
- Flag if >3 accounts share same device fingerprint
- Flag if referred users never complete qualifying actions
- Admin dashboard shows flagged accounts → you review → approve/deny.
1. PURPOSE & OVERVIEW
The X1 Referral & Rewards System is designed to incentivize platform growth through cash rewards, credits, XP, and badge milestones. To maintain fairness, prevent abuse, and ensure financial sustainability, X1 enforces strict fraud-prevention measures modeled after industry standards used by Uber, Airbnb, CashApp, DoorDash, and other major referral-driven platforms.
This policy outlines the verification requirements, detection systems, qualifying actions, and disciplinary procedures used to eliminate fraudulent referrals while still allowing legitimate users to earn unlimited rewards.
2. DEFINITIONS
2.1. Referral Fraud
Referral fraud includes any attempt to earn rewards by creating or manipulating fake, duplicate, or ineligible accounts, including but not limited to:
- Multiple accounts created by the same individual
- Accounts created using fake or disposable emails
- Accounts created using false personal information
- Use of VPNs, shared devices, or burner numbers to simulate new users
- Coordinated attempts to bypass verification requirements
- Referrals from individuals with no genuine intent to use X1 services
3. REFERRAL QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
A referral only counts toward cash, XP, or bonus rewards when the referred user meets ALL required verification and activity conditions. This applies to Trainers, Youth Athletes, Parents, and Campus Captains.
This is the core safeguard used by companies like Uber, DoorDash, and Airbnb.
3.1 Trainer Referral Qualification
A trainer referral is valid only when the referred trainer has completed:
- Identity Verification (ID / KYC)
- Bank Account Linking (Stripe/ACH)
- Full Profile Completion
- Creation of at least one training session
- Compliance approval (sports, eligibility, SafeSport logic)
No reward is issued until ALL conditions are met.
3.2 Athlete Referral Qualification
A youth athlete referral is valid only when the referred athlete has:
- Completed full athlete profile
- Uploaded at least one performance video OR booked a session
- Received parent/guardian approval (for minors)
- Passed automated legitimacy checks (IP/device/fingerprint)
3.3 Parent Referral Qualification
A parent referral is valid when the referred family:
- Creates an athlete profile
- Books and completes a paid session OR purchases a premium subscription
3.4 Campus Captain Referral Qualification
For Campus Captains:
- Sport Activated (5+ verified athletes in same sport)
- Team Activated (100% roster verified + active)
All referred users must meet normal verification rules.
4. VERIFICATION SYSTEMS
X1 uses multiple verification layers, similar to CashApp, Coinbase, Uber, and Airbnb.
4.1 Phone Number Verification (SMS Required)
Every new user must verify via SMS.
- One account per phone number
- No VOIP or virtual numbers allowed
4.2 Email Verification
Disposable or temporary email providers are blocked.
4.3 Device Fingerprinting
Used by Uber, DoorDash, Lyft.
Block logic:
- Multiple accounts from the same device → automatic review
- Mass signups from a single device → automatically invalid
4.4 IP Monitoring
Suspicious patterns trigger auto-flags:
- 3 accounts created on the same IP within 1 hour
- International IP mismatches
- Use of anonymizers / VPNs / proxies
4.5 Payment Data Verification
If an account shares a payment method or bank account with another account, referrals are automatically rejected.
4.6 Parent Verification (Youth Accounts)
Required for minors:
- Phone match
- Email match
- Optional micro-deposit or card authorization
This ensures minors do not create fake accounts to generate referrals.
5. AUTOMATED FRAUD DETECTION
X1 implements automated monitoring similar to Airbnb’s Trust & Safety systems:
Triggers for Review
- High-volume referrals in a short period
- Multiple referrals from the same household/device
- New users who do not complete qualifying actions
- Duplicate or suspicious patterns across accounts
System Actions
- Temporarily freeze rewards
- Mark referrals as "pending review"
- Require additional ID verification
- Disable payout access until cleared
6. MANUAL REVIEW SYSTEM
The X1 Trust & Safety team may manually review accounts when:
- Referral behavior appears inconsistent with normal usage
- A Campus Captain attempts unusually high-volume activation
- The payout amount exceeds internal thresholds
Manual review ensures fairness without limiting earning potential.
7. CONSEQUENCES FOR FRAUD
If referral fraud is detected:
First Offense
- Removal of fraudulent referral credits or cash
- Warning notification
- Mandatory re-verification
Second Offense
- Referral privileges suspended
- Payouts frozen for 30 days
- Removal from leaderboards
Severe or Repeated Offenses
- Account termination
- Permanent banning from referral program
- Legal action if financial damage occurs
8. UNLIMITED EARNING POLICY
X1 allows unlimited earning potential from referrals as long as:
- The referrals are legitimate
- Verification is passed
- Qualifying actions are completed
- Fraud triggers are cleared
This mirrors Uber, Lyft, CashApp, Robinhood, and Airbnb — where top referrers can earn thousands with no cap, but only from real, verified users.
9. APPEALS PROCESS
Users may appeal referral denials by submitting:
- Government ID
- Proof of relationship to referred accounts
- Screenshots / onboarding conversations
- Additional verification requested by X1
Appeals are reviewed within 7 days.
10. ENGINEERING REQUIREMENTS SUMMARY
For seamless fraud prevention, engineering must implement:
